Senator Lines GmbH began in 1987 as a subsidiary of the German shipyard Bremer Vulkan, under the name of SENATOR LINIE, with a 14-day round-the-world service.

Following German reunification, they became an East-West German company, initially through collaboration, later merger, with the shipping-line division of Deutsche Seereederei Rostock, an East German state-owned enterprise founded in 1952.

Hanjin Shipping, one of the world's biggest shipping lines, has been their principal shareholder since 1997.
